Exploring the Enchanting Dzukou Valley: My First Adventure in Nagaland

Ever since I first laid eyes on pictures of the breathtaking Dzukou Valley, it has been sitting high on my travel bucket list. Nestled in the Northeastern state of Nagaland, India, this valley is a paradise of lush greenery and serene beauty that promises an unforgettable experience. So, when the opportunity finally came, I was thrilled to embark on this adventure!

Day 0: Starting Journey

The journey to Nagaland itself was an adventure. As a first-time visitor, I was eager to immerse myself in the culture, meet new people, and most importantly, witness the natural splendor that the region is known for. I joined the trip with the NorthEastHikers group with our lead Mukesh Rabha for the trip, and we all gathered at Guwahati Railway Station to start our 3-day, 2-night trek to Dzukou Valley in June 2024. We boarded an evening train from Guwahati to Dimapur and arrived early the next morning.

Day 1: Exploring the Sites

From Dimapur, we traveled by Bolero to Kisama Heritage Village, the site of the famous Hornbill Festival. On the way, we stopped by the Kohima War Memorial, a poignant site that gave me chills as I took in the solemn atmosphere and reflected on its historical significance.

After settling into our tents, which we shared with two other trekkers, we freshened up and enjoyed a hearty lunch. Eager to explore, we set out to discover Kisama Heritage Village. As we walked through the village, the rich cultural history permeated the air, enhanced by the rainbow that appeared as rain drizzled down. The traditional Naga architecture and artifacts provided a fascinating glimpse into the region’s heritage.

After exploring Kisama Heritage Village, we returned to our tents and enjoyed evening tea and snacks. Interacting with the locals added a unique charm to the experience. Their warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage offered insights into the region’s traditions, and sharing meals with them provided a taste of authentic Naga cuisine. The clear night sky with a full moon and twinkling stars was a sight to behold, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxing and unwinding. We chatted with friends, both old and new, sharing stories and soaking in the peaceful ambiance far from our usual work routines. After a delightful dinner, we retired to our tents, eagerly anticipating the start of our trek to Dzukou Valley the next morning.

Day 2: Trekking day

Sunrise from Kisama

The next morning, waking up early to witness the stunning sunrise was a moment to cherish. We embarked on our journey heading to the Viswema trekking point by mini truck, navigating through bumpy and shaky roads that added to the sense of adventure. The initial 1.5 km of trekking was challenging, with steep climbs that tested our stamina. As we ascended to the second stoppage point, the drizzling rain and slippery terrain added an extra element of difficulty.

The motivational quotes we encounter along the trek keep our spirits high until we reach the campsite. Every step of the journey was filled with anticipation, knowing that the beauty of Dzukou Valley awaited us.

The trek took us almost 4 to 5 hours to reach the Dzukou Valley campsite, but the journey was as rewarding as the destination. Along the way, we savored the lush landscapes and exchanged stories, all the while keeping our spirits high to reach the campsite before nightfall. Reaching the valley felt like stepping into a dream. The expansive green meadows stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with colorful wildflowers that added a splash of color to the landscape.

When we arrived, the campsite buzzed with activity, bustling with different trekking groups setting up tents and engaging in various activities. After selecting our tents and settling in, I couldn’t resist the lure of a volleyball court nearby. I approached two men playing and soon found myself joining in. As more people gathered to play, our group mixed with men and two other ladies, mixing friendly competition with laughter, creating a spirited match that we eventually won after three competitive rounds.

After the exhilarating game, we relaxed with tea and a satisfying lunch, marking the end of our day’s activities. Later that night, we gathered around a bonfire, the crackling flames warming us as we dried our clothes and shoes from the day’s trek.

Despite the lack of electricity or network coverage, the starlit sky provided a mesmerizing backdrop to our cozy spot, where we shared stories and laughter under the torchlight. Our simple and light dinner added to the ambiance, making the night equally enchanting.

Day 3: Dzukou Valley

The next morning, we spent our day exploring the valley, capturing its beauty through our camera lens and soaking in the rain and serenity that enveloped the place. Whether it was hiking up to vantage points for panoramic views or simply sitting by the river, every moment was magical. The river meandered gently through the valley, its crystal-clear and chilled waters reflecting the blue skies above—a scene straight out of a postcard.

Returning to the campsite, we enjoyed a comforting lunch of Maggi noodles, a favorite among trekkers. With everyone in our group ready to depart, we took our last group photos to cherish for a lifetime.

As I packed my bags to leave, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for having experienced the beauty of Dzukou Valley. It was more than just a trip; it was a journey of self-discovery and a reminder of the incredible wonders that nature holds. We bid farewell to the campsite and began our journey back to Kisama Village, cherishing the memories of our time in the beautiful Dzukou Valley. Once we reached Kisama Village campsite, we freshened up, had our delightful lunch, and headed to Dimapur railway station for our journey back to our destination.

If you ever find yourself yearning for an escape into nature’s embrace, Dzukou Valley should definitely be on your list. Trust me, it’s a place that will leave you spellbound and longing to return.
