The Bamboo Odyssey: Exploring the Mawryngkhang Trek of Meghalaya

Perched atop the hills of Meghalaya lies an adventure like no other—the Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek situated in Wakhen. Mawryngkhang is not just a trek; it’s an experience that tests your courage, balance, and love for nature. With bamboo bridges precariously perched over roaring rivers and jagged cliffs, this trail leads to breathtaking vistas and stories of ancient legends.

In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through this thrilling trek, sharing its unique challenges, the mesmerizing beauty of Meghalaya, and why it’s a must-visit for every adventure enthusiast.

Journey to this Trek

The journey began in Shillong, with a scenic two-hour drive winding through the hills. It was a fun-filled group picnic, and we made sure to pack light, bringing along snacks like juice, fresh strawberries, bread, jam, and chips to munch on during the drive.

For lunch, we picked up packed meals from a local shop, each portion carefully wrapped for convenience. This thoughtful preparation kept our trekking trail light and hassle-free, sparing us the burden of carrying heavy utensils.

Start of the Trek

The entry fee for the trek was a modest 100 rupees per person. The first 1.5 kilometers of the trail were relatively easy, as we descended towards a serene river stream, crossing over small bamboo bridges. It was a pleasant start, surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty. However, as we progressed, the trail became more challenging. We began the steep climb up the hills, each step taking us closer to the heart of this thrilling adventure.

A journey across swaying bamboo bridges, precariously perched along cliffs, this trail is not for the faint-hearted.

Yet, for those who dare, it offers an unmatched reward: the thrill of the climb, the serenity of panoramic views, and the satisfaction of conquering fears.

Constructed entirely from locally sourced bamboo, the trail is a marvel of indigenous engineering. Each step you take along its narrow bridges tests your balance and trust in the craftsmanship of the local villagers who maintain it. Below, the Wahrew River rushes, creating a symphony of nature that accompanies trekkers every step of the way.

The trail is not just about adrenaline—it’s a journey into the soul of Meghalaya. Although I have a fear of heights, I was excited to face it head-on, reminding myself of the saying, “Darr ke aage jeet hai” (“Victory lies beyond fear”). Each step was a mix of exhilaration and apprehension as we made our way up the steep, narrow bamboo bridges. At times, crossing paths with others felt challenging due to the tight spaces, but we took it slow, pausing at every turn to catch our breath.

Reaching the Top Viewpoint

When we finally reached the viewpoint at the top, a wave of satisfaction and excitement washed over us. The panoramic views of the surrounding hills were worth every step. We spent about 20 to 30 minutes there, snapping photos, soaking in the scenery, chatting, and resting. The cool breeze added to the fun, making the experience even more memorable.

On our way back, we stopped by a peaceful riverside to cool off. The water was refreshingly cold and deep, perfect for a quick swim. Afterward, we found a comfortable spot on the rocks, shared some food, and enjoyed our lunch together.

The entire trek, including our leisurely breaks, took about 3 to 4 hours, leaving us with both a sense of accomplishment and plenty of happy memories.

Essential to Pack for the Trek
