I have always believed that certain journeys are meant to be taken alone—to fully immerse into the moment, connect with strangers, and discover a piece of yourself along the way. My trip to the Ziro Festival was exactly that: an unforgettable adventure of music, nature, friendship, and self-discovery.
A Valley of Dreams
The moment I arrived in Ziro Valley, I was awestruck. The landscape unfolded like a dream—golden paddy fields stretching endlessly, lush green hills rising in the distance, and pink-white-yellow cosmos flowers swaying in the crisp autumn breeze. It was a world far removed from the chaos of city life.
A Solo Traveler’s Guide to Ziro
- Getting There: I flew to Guwahati, then took an overnight train to Naharlagun (the nearest railway station). From there, a scenic road trip to Ziro took about 5-6 hours.
- Where to Stay: I opted for a tent which tends to be a bit cheaper as compared to homestay, and it was the best decision! They welcomed me with open arms and delicious home-cooked meals. Camping is also a great option for those who love the outdoors.
- Pro Tip: The temperature drops at night, so carry warm clothes, and don’t forget a raincoat, as unexpected drizzles are common.
A Celebration Beyond Music
While the festival is the heart of the experience, Ziro Valley itself has so much more to offer. Wander through the golden paddy fields, engage with the Apatani community, and marvel at their unique sustainable farming techniques. The sight of ready-to-harvest paddy fields, framed by lush mountains, is truly mesmerizing for all who appreciate nature’s beauty.
Timeless Moments That Stay With Me Forever
Waking up to the sight of pine trees and golden fields, with cosmos flowers swaying in the breeze, felt like stepping into a dream. As a solo traveler, the valley’s peaceful vibe was the perfect break from the usual chaos of life. One of the highlights of this trip was meeting a fellow traveler at the festival. We instantly hit it off, bonding over our shared love for music and adventure.
On a whim, I reached out to a local friend from Arunachal, and together, we set off on a spontaneous bike ride to explore Ziro beyond the festival grounds. Riding through misty hills, passing bamboo houses and endless paddy fields, the cool mountain breeze against my face gave me a feeling of pure freedom.
Boat Ride
Our adventure led us to a tranquil lake named ‘Siikhe Lake‘, where we went boating, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that mirrored the sky. The boat ride was a paddle-powered adventure, and we spent nearly an hour drifting around the lake, enjoying the peaceful views and chatting along the way. Afterwards, we strolled through the park, snapped some photos, and relaxed on the grass under a tree. Along the way, we noticed an old couple taking photos of each other, which was incredibly heartwarming.
The View Point
One of the most soul-stirring experiences for me was sitting at the view-point restaurant. Sipping coffee and soaking in the breathtaking sight of a valley slowly reclaiming its serene, peaceful tranquility.
As evening fell, we headed for a soulful meal at a cozy local eatery in the main town of Ziro. We ordered a steaming bowl of veg soup, freshly cooked rice, and spicy meat (Chicken and Pork) curry which was delicious. Afterwards, I had ‘Misti Paan‘ after the meal was the perfect way to end a day of exploration. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, I felt nothing but gratitude for this journey.
Concert Night
We went to the concert later and enjoyed watching different bands perform. Later at night, I still remember the moment after the concert was over, we lost our way while trying to find our respective tents and ended up wandering through the jungle at midnight under a full moon. It was eerie—there was no one around, just the rustling of leaves and the distant sound of insects. After nearly 40 minutes of riding, we finally spotted a house in the darkness. As we approached, a dog started barking loudly, breaking the silence of the night.
We stopped, and I got down from the bike to ask for directions. Knocking on the door a few times, I felt a mix of relief and apprehension when I finally heard a man’s voice from inside. After a brief pause, he opened the door slightly and guided us back to the main road leading to the city.
The ride back was freezing. The cold mountain air cut through me, and my light jacket did little to keep me warm. Shivering on the bike, I silently prayed to reach early, longing for the warmth of my cozy tent and the comfort of sleep after an eventful night.

There’s something magical about experiencing live music in the lap of nature. With mountains framing the stage, a cool breeze carrying the beats, and strangers dancing together like long-lost friends—it was pure bliss.
A Foodie’s Haven & Shopper’s Paradise
What made the festival even more fascinating was the vibrant mix of food, drinks, and local craftsmanship that added to the experience. Beyond music, Ziro Festival is a celebration of flavors and artistry. There are stalls serving authentic Arunachali delicacies and showcasing intricate Apatani handicrafts.
As a food lover, I couldn’t resist indulging in some local specialties:
- Smoked pork with bamboo shoot – A flavorful and traditional Arunachali delicacy.
- Apong (local rice beer) – Mild, refreshing, and a must-try!
- Handmade fruit jams – Sweet souvenirs to take home.
Beer lovers had an extra reason to rejoice—Kingfisher handed out free beer coupons. A cherry on top, each coupon allowed one free refill, making it the ultimate festival treat for those who like to drink!
