Whispers of Autumn: A Journey to the Waterfalls of Jaintia Hills

Autumn in Jaintia Hills is a season of transformation, where nature whispers its secrets through cascading waterfalls and rustling leaves. The vibrant greenery softens into warm hues, and the waterfalls, rejuvenated by monsoon rains, flow with unmatched grace. Our journey began from Shillong, winding through scenic roads that offered glimpses of cherry blossom trees along the way. However, with only a day to explore, we managed to visit three spectacular waterfalls, each requiring a little bit of trailing to reach. The effort was well worth it, as we found ourselves immersed in nature’s tranquility, with mist-laden air and the soothing symphony of water meeting rocks.

Explore Jaintia Hills in autumn to witness nature’s poetry in motion, where every drop feels like a whisper of the season’s magic.

Tyrshi Waterfall

The journey from Shillong to our first stop, Tyrshi Waterfall, took about two and a half hours. Nestled away from the usual tourist trails, this less popular gem had no entry ticket or bustling crowds. The absence of tourists made it feel like a private retreat, allowing us to explore at our own pace.

Surrounded by serene beauty, clear sky, and the soothing sounds of cascading water, it was as though we had the entire place to ourselves—a rare and enchanting experience.

Phe Phe Falls

Phe Phe Falls offers two entry points, each leading to a unique experience. One side takes you to a spot where you can enjoy boating to cross the river, with a fee of ₹100 per adult, followed by a scenic trail that winds alongside a black wire for approximately 30-40 minutes. The other entry, which we opted for, is a direct trail leading straight to the falls, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty without the added detour. Both routes offer their charm, making the journey to the waterfall equally rewarding.

From Tyrshi Waterfall, it’s a 30-minute drive to Phe Phe Falls, followed by a trail of about 20-30 minutes from the parking area. Parking costs ₹50 for two-wheelers and ₹100 for four-wheelers, with an additional ₹50 entry fee per adult.

The trail descends gradually, and the sound of the waterfall greets you from afar, building anticipation. Unlike Tyrshi, Phe Phe Falls was a bit more crowded. Visitors can rent life jackets for an additional fee, as swimming is only allowed with them.

As we reached the base, we were greeted by crystal-clear, cold blue water, a refreshing sight. Since it’s autumn, the waterfall wasn’t as heavy, but the clear sunny sky enhanced its charm. Sitting on the rocks, we took in the serene beauty, feeling the cool breeze brush our faces. The soothing sounds of water mingled with birdsong created a peaceful ambiance, making it a perfect spot to unwind and connect with nature.

Krang Shuri Waterfall

Our final stop for the day was the stunning KrangSuri Waterfall, which also offers two entry points. One entry involves a short 10-minute drive with minimal trailing, while the other, which we chose, includes a 20-minute drive followed by a 20-minute trail. This route also features a zip-lining option for those seeking a thrilling way to reach the waterfall area directly. Parking costs ₹50.

Krang Suri is one of the more popular spots in the region, drawing larger crowds due to its easy access and fame.

Visitors can enjoy swimming in the clear blue waters by renting a life jacket for an additional fee. On bright sunny days, a rainbow often appears where the water cascades, adding to its magical allure. For those looking to explore more, boating is available above the waterfall, offering a serene view of the surrounding scenic beauty. Despite the crowd, the vibrant atmosphere and breathtaking views make KrangSuri a memorable highlight of the day.

After exploring all three spots, we stopped by a local shop for a much-needed lunch to satisfy our hunger and recharge for the rest of the day.
